The thread system
Every citizen is paired at thirteen. The bond between two people manifests as a colored thread, and the color tells the system what kind of love it is dealing with. Gold is rare. Red is monitored. Gray means the system has interfered. White is not supposed to exist.
Threads are made from veilsilk, a substance harvested from the boundary between worlds. It is the magic in the magic system, and the people in charge are running out of it.
A small number of people can read the threads directly. Lira is one. The Threadweavers know this is dangerous. They have known for a long time.
Structure
The series is built in four three-book arcs. Each arc moves the story forward and asks one core question.
Arc One
"What if the only person who actually sees you is the one they're going to take away?"
Lira meets Tieran. Their thread is a color the system has spent forty years pretending isn't real. Ages 13-14. The arc ends with a rescue, a kiss, and a choice that breaks the world wide open.
Arc Two
"What does the system do when your bond becomes a banner?"
Two years on. Lira and Tieran are no longer kids in a cell. They're symbols, and symbols draw fire. The bond holds. The cost gets real.
Arc Three
"What's left of you after a war you survived together?"
Victory comes. So does loss. The arc moves from rebellion to rebuilding, follows Lira and Tieran into the next stage of life together, and ends with the kind of love that survives losing people.
Arc Four
"What does the next pair do with the world the first one bled for?"
Caleb and Nael. New bond, new gold thread, the world their parents fought for already showing cracks. The arc closes the series with the question we started with, asked again with everything earned in between.
